The weather is slowly starting to warm up, which means more and more people can be spotted trekking along the Cultural Trail connecting Fountain Square to Downtown Indy. That also makes it the perfect time to try some new restaurants in the area that opened during the fall and winter. Here’s a guide to some of the newest additions to the FS/downtown region:
Pioneer
This past fall, Pioneer opened its doors, offering up an interesting selection of Italian cuisines. Pioneer is a great new place in the heart of Fountain Square to stop by for drinks (local draft beers and fine wines by the glass or bottle are available) or for a nice dinner out. The braised pork belly, meatballs, and gnocchi all come highly recommended.
The Eagle
Many are claiming that The Eagle on Mass Ave has the best fried chicken they’ve ever tasted…and that’s a pretty steep claim. As a southern comfort food restaurant, their menu boasts mac and cheese, sweet potatoes, po-boy, biscuits, mashed potatoes, brown sugar, and fresh fries. Trust me, you’ll be coming back here again and again.
Marrow
Marrow opened last October, bringing Fountain Square locally sourced soul food. Their menu includes delights such as green papaya salad, eel & brisket rangoon, fried catfish, vegetable udon, kimchi slaw, green tea tiramisu, and smoked sweet potato pie.
Amelia’s Bread
Sure, Amelia’s isn’t new, but their storefront in Fletcher Place, next to Bluebeard is. Stop in for fresh bread or pastry, including croissants (plain or chocolate), coffee cake, cookies, brownies, and Kouign Amann (a specialty croissant).
Nicey Treat
This past fall also saw the opening of Nicey Treat (right next to Ameila’s Bread) in Fletcher Place. Swing by for your favorite frozen treats in a variety of intriguing flavors, such as Strawberry Mint, Pineapple Basil, Not So Hot Chocolate, and Avocado.
You have to try these new places as the weather starts to warm up. You’re bound to find a few new favorite dishes and desserts. Be sure to let us know what you think!
