Nestled in the heart of Fletcher Place, along the Cultural Trail, is a small, local coffee shop appropriately titled Calvin Fletcher’s Coffee Company. Any resident of Fountain Square can tell you about this unique café, with its dedication to community service, support of local artists, and passion for creating a great tasting cup of coffee.
Calvin Fletcher’s Coffee Company first opened its doors in September of 2009. What began as a startup business in a still developing part of Fountain Square is now a bustling coffee company right in the center of dozens of popular restaurants and businesses in Fletcher Place.
I love visiting Calvin Fletcher’s to see what new espresso drink or combination they have posted and look at the local art pieces on sale and on display. A creature of habit, I tend to stick to my normal Ethiopian Yirgacheffe or an Americano and sometimes, a chocolate chip pumpkin muffin, but I also love sampling new and interesting sounding drinks. Calvin Fletcher’s Coffee Company also sells whole beans to grind at home, which is generally where I buy all of my coffee for the coming week. In fact, this is generally the first place I bring all of my out of town visitors. While there are local coffee shops everywhere, there is just something unique and special about Calvin’s that is almost difficult to put into words.

Perhaps it’s the unique blend of people found inside. On any given day you will find a mix of college students, local urban professionals, artists, teachers, and people wandering the Cultural Trail stopping by Calvin Fletcher’s. Or, maybe it’s their delicious, local selection of pastries (from Circle City Sweets) that helps push them beyond other coffee shops. Maybe it’s the fact that they donate most of their profits to a different charity or organization every month to give back to the community. Or, it could be their unparalleled dedication to helping local artists sell and showcase their work. Then again, it might just be that they truly do make a superior cup of coffee.
Calvin Fletcher’s Coffee Company is looking to do big things, too. They are focused on donating all of their profits to different local organizations by the end of 2015, giving away money to community members in need, purchasing a coffee roaster, acquiring beans directly from local growers, and perhaps most excitingly, buying a van and more equipment for their own coffee truck.
