Corporations are a vital part of any economy. They bring jobs, revenue, and general support towards the environment they’re placed in. This is especially true for local economies in an urban environment. Take corporate Indy for example; Indy has had numerous Fortune 500 companies grace it’s skyscrapers, currently, and in years past. If you’re looking to move to Indy, or if you’re just generally interested in getting to know some of the corporations that help breathe life into the city you call home, check out the list below for a rundown of some of Indy’s most accomplished corporations!
ELI LILLY AND COMPANY
Based in the heart of downtown Indianapolis, Eli Lilly and Company is perhaps Indiana’s most well-known and successful company. Started in the 1870s by Colonel Eli Lilly, a pharmaceutical chemist and Civil War veteran, Lilly and Company first began making drugs to be used by the medical profession, and had a first-year profit of $4,470. Fast forward many moons, to 2014, and you have the 10th largest global pharmaceutical sales corporation. The stats for Eli Lilly are quite impressive when listed side by side: a Fortune 500 Company with yearly revenues of around $20 billion publically traded on the NYSE, an S&P 500 member, and they have offices in 17 other countries!
Aside from those impressive numbers, Eli Lilly seems to try and use all that revenue for some good in the local community. The Lilly Endowment is one of the largest philanthropic foundations in the world! With around a $7.3 billion endowment, this foundation has had some remarkable achievements in the local community. For instance, the Endowments most notable accomplishment has been the Giving Indiana Funds for Tomorrow (GIFT) initiative, which starts community foundations in Indiana. Thanks in part to the Lilly Endowment; Indiana has more community foundations than any other state in the U.S.
Wellpoint is a managed health care company, which is headquartered in Indianapolis on Monument Circle, literally smack dab in the center of the city. This company is so successful that it’s actually the largest for-profit managed health care company in the Blue Cross and Blue Shield Association.
Yet another health care based corporation, Roche Diagnostics is a division of the Swiss health care company Hoffman-La Roche. This particular division focuses on equipment manufacturing and reagents for medical diagnostic applications. This Indianapolis based firm was named as one of Fortune Magazines’ top 100 companies to work for in 2013. Roche’s employee facility apparently boasts an on-site medical clinic, fitness center, a $30,000 budget for intramural sports, and health insurance tiered to income levels.
SALESFORCE MARKETING CLOUD
Formerly known as ExactTarget, Salesforce Marketing Cloud was acquired by Salesforce in 2014 as a $2.5 billion purchase. This unique corporation provides services that didn’t even exist a few years prior to its conception. As a “marketing cloud”, Salesforce provides digital marketing automation, along with analytics software and services. For those of you unfamiliar with this new-ish terminology, analytics software provides businesses with vital information regarding the development of their social media marketing campaigns and general digital presences. Salesforce also owns some useful digitally centric companies like CoTweet, Pardot, and iGoDigital.
SIMON PROPERTY GROUP
Last, but certainly not least, is Simon Property Group, the #1 ranked real estate investment trust in the entirety of the United States. Owners of more than 325 properties across the US and Asia, including numerous malls, outlet centers, lifestyle/community centers, and international properties, which all in all add up to approximately 241,000,000 square feet of property!
